AdAway and other similar alternatives work by "blocking" DNS queries to anything that matches lists of hosts/domains known to serve ads, trackers, etc. This would work if YouTube served ads from a dedicated domain (eg: ads.youtube.com) as it could be blocked without breaking anything else, but they use the same domain for videos and ads
A fairly straightforward way to block certain sites such as Youtube is to use one of OpenWrt's adblock packages. Jan 28, 2023 · For android phones, AdBlock browser plays YT and eliminates the YT ads. it still shows the advertisement done by the creator themselves, though. Don't use the stupid YT app! On PC, install SponsorBlock add in to chrome. that also cuts out 99% of the creator created promotions (inc. self-promotions).
Some of us may remember that there was a popular Adblock app on the AppStore called “Adblock Wifi” which blocks ads with a simple HTTP proxy. Their newer app is Luna Adblock, which mandates you to install and connect to their VPN. I’m currently still using their old HTTP proxy method on my iOS devices and it blocks YouTube ads perfectly.

No. If the viewer uses an adblocker then the ad does not run and you do not get paid for that view. YouTubers get paid depending on how many times people click on ads. You can’t click on an ad that isn’t there, so yes, adblockers affect YouTubers’ ad revenue. Yotubers don't get paid that way.
